Manganese: Manganese is the 12th most abundant element in the earth's crust and the 4th most used metal in the world in terms of tonnage - after iron, aluminium and copper. Its uses range from steel making to the production of aluminium cans, from battery production and electronics to fertilisers. |

Around 90% of manganese consumed worldwide is used in the steel industry - where it is used as a cleansing agent (to desulphurise steel and prevent oxidation) and as an alloying element to improve toughness and increase hardness. Manganese is an essential and non-substitutable input in the manufacture of steel products, and thereby demand for manganese is directly linked to world industrial growth.

Consumption of Manganese ore has been going up considerably due to a number of steel plants being set up in Orissa, India . Consumption of steel worldwide has been going up progressively too. Orissa's share in production of high-grade manganese is 11.6%. So, beneficiation of low-grade manganese to high grade for manufacture of Ferro- manganese is necessary at the present juncture. Orissa has approx 116 Million Mt of manganese reserves (which is growing with continued exploration) out of India 's reserves of 406 Million Mt of manganese ore. |
